In case anyone is interested, I added a brief discussion of Jonathan Shapiro's "Programming Language Challenges in Systems Codes: Why Systems Programmers Still Use C, and What to Do About It" to Systems programming. He has an interesting definition of systems programs, and significant insights into the requirements for a systems programming language.
